Acts Of Parliament
When reading an Act of Parliament you
should first establish the extend of its jurisdiction. This is
particularly important for laws enacted by the Government of the
United Kingdom as often an act will only apply to England and Wales.
However, there are many acts, such as the Regulation of
Investigatory Powers Act 2001, that will specify its jurisdiction
outside England & Wales or make specific references to laws only
applicable in other jurisdictions, such as Scotland and Northern
Ireland.
Scotland has its own legal
and judicial system and enacts its own laws.
Northern Ireland has many
specific laws that apply solely to its own jurisdiction.
